How do you crack open a coconut?

Misc.
I've added fresh coconut to a dessert as a garnish.
Coconuts are a pain, at least to me. Do you have a tried and true way of opening a coconut? Please share.....I'm gonna hurt myself the way I'm doing it (hammer icepick and knife or grater)
I keep thinking if it was this hard no one would have ever bothered with these suckers in the first place....please share your secrets.
thanks!
Nancy
