Recipe: 1940s -- Cheerios too came to us
Misc.ADVERTISEMENT
If you decide to have some 1940's-1950's foods
on the buffet table, you might want to do a
little place card giving the brief history
of the food to help guests associate your
foods with the 50-year theme.

Re Cheerios...
General Mills' best-selling, ready-to-eat
cereal was originally Cheeri Oats when it
was first introduced in 1941. Developed
as a convenient alternative to hot oatmeal,
it was America's first oat-based,
ready-to-eat cereal.
The name Cheeri Oats had to be changed in
1945, to avoid a conflict with a competitor
who suggested they had exclusive rights to
use the word "oats" in a commercial name.
Thus, "Cheeri Oats" was changed to
"Cheerios."
The rest, as they say, is history.
Here is one recipe using Cheerios...
CHEERIOS CHOCOLATE BARS
1/2 cup margarine
1 box German chocolate cake mix
1 1/2 cups mini marshmallows
1 cup chopped pecans
6 ounces chocolate chips
2 cups Cheerios
14 oz can sweetened condensed milk
Melt margarine in 15 x 10 x 1 cake pan. Sprinkle German chocolate
cake mix over it and pat down. Sprinkle on in a layer, mini
marshmallows, chopped pecans, chocolate chips, and Cheerios.
Drizzle sweetened condensed milk over top. Bake at 375 degrees
20-25 minutes or until brown.
