Recipe: 4 Sweet and Sour Sauce Recipes
Misc.Hi Doris,
Here are four recipes that might be what you're looking for. I'm not sure if red food coloring is used in the restaurant sauces. I'd be interested in seeing any other recipes for this.

Here's a sweet and sour recipe I like alot. It came from the Washington Post in the late 70's. I add onion, green pepper, pineapple, etc, if I have it.
Sweet and Sour Sauce
1/4 Cup sugar
1/4 Cup vinegar
1/4 tsp salt
2 tsp cornstarch
1/2 Cup beef or pork bullion
1 tbs water
1 tbs cooking oil
2 tbs ketchup
Combine sugar, vinegar, salt, bullion and cornstarch. Set aside. Heat cooking oil. Fry ketchup and add vinegar mixture. Bring to boil and stir constantly until thick.
Here's two more sweet and sour sauces
Sweet and Sour Sauce
1/4 cup brown sugar (packed)
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 can (8 1/4 ounces) pineapple chunks, drained (reserve syrup)
1/4 cup vinegar
2 tablespoons catsup
In 2 quart saucepan, mix sugar and cornstarch. Add enough water to reserved pineapple syrup to measure 1 cup. Stir syrup mixture, vinegar, and catsup into cornstarch mixture. Cook, stirring constatnly, until mixture thinkens and boils. Stir in pineapple. Keep warm over very low heat.
