Brownstone Front Cake

1 cup raisins, cooked, drained and chopped
1 cup finely chopped nuts (optional)
2 1/2 cups flour (sift before measuring)
1 tsp. soda
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon

3/4 cup sour or buttermilk

3 eggs, unbeaten

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease the bottom of a 13 x 9 x 2 inch pan.

Simmer raisins in small amount of water until plump and tender; drain and chop or grind with nuts (nuts are optional); set aside.

Sift together flour, soda, salt, and spices.

Stir in butter and brown sugar.

Add milk and mix until all flour is dampened; beat 2 minutes.

Add eggs and beat 1 minute longer.

Add raisins and nut mixture; blend. Turn into prepared pan.

Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes. When cool, spread cake with favorite frosting.

BROWNSTONE FRONT CAKE

2 cups brown sugar
1/2 cup butter, softened
3 egg yolks
1 cup buttermilk
1 cup stewed raisins
1 cup chopped walnuts
2 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
3 egg whites, stiffly beaten

NOTE: This recipe had no instructions included. Here is my suggestion for how to prepare the cake basically following the above recipe's instructions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease the bottom of a 13 x 9 x 2 inch pan.

Cream together the brown sugar and butter. Beat in the egg yolks and buttermilk. Stir in the stewed raisins and chopped walnuts.

Sift together the dry ingredients and mix into batter until well blended.

Gently fold in the stiffly beaten egg whites.

Bake at 350 degrees for 45-50 minutes or until done.

Hello Gpushee,

Neither of these recipes have cocoa but the recipes for this cake that I have that use cocoa don't have any spices. I think a couple of tablespoons of cocoa could be added to these recipes with good results. I hope someone will have the exact recipe for you.

Happy Baking!
