Buttermilk Bars

1 1/4 cups sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 cups sifted flour
1/2 cup butter
1 egg, well beaten
3/4 tsp salt
3/4 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp soda
1 cup buttermilk
1 cup chopped walnuts

Mix both sugars and flour. Cut butter in as for pie crust.

Combine 2 cups of sugar/flour mixture with nuts. Press in the bottom of pan, about 13 x 9-inches. Beat remaining ingredients until smooth. Stir into remaining crumb mixture.

Spread over first layer and bake at 350 for 45 minutes. Cool and cut into bars.

Buttermilk Bars

2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 stick margarine
1/2 cup shortening
4 Tbsp. cocoa
1 cup water
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 tsp. soda
2 eggs, well beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
Sift flour with sugar.
Frosting:
1 stick margarine
1/2 cup cocoa
1/3 cup buttermilk
1 box powdered sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
nuts

Combine margarine, shortening, cocoa and water. Bring to rapid boil. Pour over flour and sugar mixture while hot. Add mixture of buttermilk and soda. Add eggs and vanilla. Pour into greased 1 x 16-inch pan. Bake at 375 for 25 minutes.

For frosting, combine margarine, cocoa and milk; bring to a boil. Add sugar; beat until creamy. Add nuts and vanilla. Frost bars while hot and still in pan.

3/4 cup chopped nuts
1/2 cup soft butter
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 cup buttermilk
1 egg, well beaten
1 tsp. baking soda
3/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. salt

Mix sugar, flour, brown sugar, chopped nuts, butter and baking soda. Use 2 cups of this mixture and spread lightly in buttered 9 x 13-inch pan.

Mix buttermilk mixture well into balance of crumbs. Pour into pan and bake at 350 degrees for half hour to 45 minutes. Test after 1/2 hour, add more time if needed. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.

4 Tbsp. cocoa
1 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 cup water
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup oil
2 eggs
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/2 tsp. burnt sugar flavoring
Frosting:
3 Tbsp. margarine
2 Tbsp. cocoa
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

Sift dry ingredients. Bring to a boil water, oil and butter. Pour over dry ingredients. Beat eggs and stir in buttermilk. Add flavoring. Pour in jelly roll pan. Bake 20 minutes at 350.

Frosting: melt the butter and add cocoa, butter, sugar and vanilla. Mix well and frost.

1 stick oleo
1 cup chopped nuts
1 egg
3/4 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. soda
1 cup buttermilk

Mix sugar, flour, salt, cut in butter. Combine 2 cups mixture with nuts. Press in 9 x 13-inch pan. Beat remaining mixture with the rest of ingredients. Spread over first layer. Bake at 325 degrees for 25 minutes.

Applesauce Buttermilk Bars

2 cups flour
1/4 cup buttermilk powder
2 tsp. soda
3 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. cloves
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 cups applesauce
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup raisins
1 cup chopped nuts

Sift together flour, buttermilk powder, soda, cinnamon and cloves, set aside.

Cream shortening and sugar. Beat in eggs. Add applesauce and vanilla. Stir in dry ingredients until well mixed. Do not over-beat. Add raisins and nuts. Pour into greased 15 1/2 x 10 1/2 x 1 1/2-inch pan. Bake 40 to 45 minutes at 350.
