Recipe: Calico Beans (8)

CALICO BEANS WITH HAMBURGER
1/2 lb. bacon, diced
1 med. onion, chopped
1 (15 oz.) can kidney beans, drained
3/4 c. catsup
2 tsp. mustard
1 tsp. salt
1 lb. ground round or hamburger
1 (1 lb. 5 oz.) can pork 'n beans
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. vinegar
1/3 c. brown sugar
Fry bacon until crisp and remove. Brown ground beef, add onions and cook lightly. Add all the beans and bacon. In small bowl, combine seasonings and add to beans. Place entire mixture in greased casserole and bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 45 minutes.


CALICO BEANS AND CORNBREAD
1 to 1 1/2 lbs. ground beef
1 c. chopped onion
1/4 lb. chopped bacon
1/2 c. green pepper
1 tbsp. vinegar
1/2 c. ketchup
1 tbsp. prepared mustard
1/2 c. brown sugar
2 or 3 of the following -
sm. lima beans, sm.
kidney beans, green
beans, baked beans
(1 can each, drained
or frozen)
Saute first 4 ingredients until well browned; drain. Mix in remaining ingredients in a large casserole dish. Bake at 375 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes while preparing cornbread. 3/4 c. cornmeal 2 to 4 tbsp. sugar 1 tbsp. baking powder (heaping) Dash of salt 1 egg 2/3 c. milk 1/3 c. melted butter, margarine, or oil Mix dry ingredients together. Beat remaining ingredients together, then add all at once and stir just until moist. Spread on top of beef and bean mixture. Bake at 375 degrees for approximately 25 minutes.


CALICO BEANS (COWBOY BEANS)
1/2 lb. bacon1 lb. hamburger or ground venison
1/2 c. chopped onions
1 tbsp. oregano
1/2 c. ketchup
1/2 c. molasses
1/4 c. brown sugar
1 tbsp. vinegar
2 tbsp. prepared mustard
1 can pork and beans
1 c. kidney beans (drained)
1 c. butter beans
Bake at 350 oven for 1 hour or put in a slow cooker for 1 hour on low.


CALICO BEANS
1/2 to 1/4 lb. bacon
1 lb. hamburger
1/2 c. chopped onion
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. catsup
2 tbsp. vinegar
1 tbsp. mustard
1 tsp. salt
1 sm. can lima beans
1 can kidney beans, drained
1 lg. can pork and beans
Brown bacon and hamburger. Add onion and saute. Drain. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Bake at 300 degrees for 1 1/2 hours. Stir occasionally. Or simmer in an electric pan for 1 1/2 hours.


CALICO BEANS
1 (16 oz.) lima beans
1 (16 oz.) butter beans
1 (16 oz.) pork and beans1/2 lb. bacon or ground chuck
1 onion, diced
1/2 green pepper, diced
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. ketchup
1/2 c. vinegar
1 tsp. garlic
1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp. mustard
2 tomatoes, diced
Drain liquid from beans. Put all the beans in a roasting pan (about 5-pound roaster). Brown 1/2 pound bacon or ground chuck; drain grease off. Also saute onions and green peppers with meat, just to get to change color. Then add brown sugar, ketchup, vinegar, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, mustard and tomatoes; bring sauce and meat to a boil. Add sauce to beans and set overnight in refrigerator for better taste. Can be baked immediately. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes, then 300 degrees for 45 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes. Cover first 45 minutes, then last 15 minutes uncover.


CALICO BEANS
1/2 lb. bacon
2 onions, chopped
2 tsp. seasoned salt
1 1/2 to 2 c. brown sugar
1 can green beans
1 can pinto beans
1 can lima beans
1 can butter beans
1 can pork and beans
Brown bacon until crisp. Remove bacon and brown onions in the bacon grease. Add bacon, salt, sugar and all beans. Heat thoroughly.


PARTY CALICO BEANS
1/2 lb. ground beef
1/2 lb. diced bacon
1 lg. onion
3/4 c. catsup
2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. prepared mustard
4 tsp. vinegar
3/4 c. light brown sugar
1 tsp. liquid smoke (optional)
1 can pork and beans
1 can garbanzo beans, drained
1 can kidney beans
1 pkg. frozen Fordhook lima beans
Cook beef, bacon, and onions in a large skillet until tender and slightly brown. Stir in catsup, salt, mustard and vinegar. Cook until it starts to bubble, approximately 5 minutes. Combine with beans in large casserole, cover. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes (I precook limas for softer beans).


BARBECUE CALICO BEANS
1 lb. ground round
1 med. chopped onions
1 bottle hickory smoked barbecue sauce
1/4 c. prepared mustard
3 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
3 tbsp. soy sauce
3/4 c. ketchup
Salt and pepper to taste
5 or 6 cans different color and shape
beans (cans all the same size)
Brown meat with onions. Drain excess fat. Combine all ingredients in crock pot. Drain beans, except pork & beans or chili beans if used. Add to pot. Set it, forget it. Ready when you are.
