Chocolate Sheet Cake (Texas Sheet cake)
rec.food.recipes/Caryn Dubelkos (1999)
This was a trademark dessert of my Grandma Thurmans. There always used to be a chocolate sheet cake (or part of one!) at her house. After she died, my dad made sure he had it often for family get-togethers. Now that he's gone, I'm making it for friends and family and it reminds me of the days we spent together...
2 cups sugar,
2 cups flour
dash of salt
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup cocoa,
1/2 cup shortening,
1 cup water.
2 eggs
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla
Mix together sugar, flour and salt. Place butter, cocoa, shortening and water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. When it reaches a boil, add flour and sugar.
Beat together. Mix buttermilk with baking soda. Then add eggs, buttermilk mixture and vanilla. Beat until smooth. Grease and flour pan (10x15) Pour batter into pan, and bake at 350 for 20 minutes.
Chocolate Frosting:
1 stick (1/2 cup) butter
4 tsp. cocoa
6 tsp. milk
1 lb. sifted powdered sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
Heat butter, milk and cocoa in saucepan for about 5 minutes before cake is done. Then add vanilla and powdered sugar to mixture; stir together Frost cake when you take it from the oven.
