Yvonne,
I grew up in a Polish & Hungarian neighborhood in South Bend, IN and both nationalities claimed "keeflies" of "kiflis" as their own. Here is a shorten version of the recipe that was given to me by my Hungarian neighbor. By shorten, I mean ingredients in smaller measurements and nothing was left out. The original recipe given to me made over 200 cookies!
KEEFLIES
DOUGH:
2 cups flour
2 sticks of butter
1/2 cup or 4 oz of sour cream
3 egg yolks
Mix flour & butter like pastry. Add beaten yolks & sour cream. After mixing together, knead dough & refrigerate til firm. Form into small balls & roll out paper thin. Flour generously the table or board when rolling dough. Take a teaspoon of filling & roll into a crescent shape. Bake at 350 until golden brown. After cooling, dust with powdered sugar.
FILLING:
3 cups ground walnuts
1/2 lb. powdered sugar
3 egg whites
Beat egg whites & add sugar. Beat until smooth. Add ground walnuts. Chill until firm.
