"HOME asked viewers to send in their favorite and best barbecue sauce recipe. Elaine Franczek from Knoxville, Tennessee, won handily with her Mahogany Barbecue Sauce with two secret ingredients - cocoa and cinnamon. We get so many requests for the sauce that it's time you had it again."
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/3 cup chopped green bell pepper
1/3 cup chopped celery
3 tbsp. oil
1 tbsp. garlic powder
1 tbsp. chili powder
1 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. ground black pepper
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 cup ketchup
1/2 cup cider vinegar
1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
1/3 cup molasses
1/2 cup water
1 tbsp. horseradish
1 tsp. Tabasco sauce
Saute onions, green peppers, and celery in oil.
Stir in garlic powder, chili powder, cocoa powder, salt, black pepper, and cinnamon. Add ketchup, cider vinegar, brown sugar, molasses, 1/2 cup water, horseradish, and Tabasco sauce. Simmer 20-30 minutes to desired thickness.
Makes 2 1/2 cups
