Recipe(tried): Mexican Turnovers with Green Chili Sauce

Main Dishes - Assorted
Mexican Turnover

Green Chili Sauce:
1 lb. pork, cubed pretty small
salt & pepper to taste
water
16 oz. tomato sauce (cans only come in 14.5 oz. that we can find so we use a large can and a small can and just put it all in)
16 oz. tomatoes, chopped (same as above about the can size)
1 tsp hot jalapeno peppers (from 1 small can - just use a tsp or so, or it will be wayyyyy to hot!!)
2 small cans green chili peppers, chopped
1 tbsp garlic powder
1 tsp. salt
2 Tbsp cumin powder

Filling:
1 lb. hamburger
1 envelope taco mix (fry as directed on pkg with hamburger)

8 puff pastries (one package will make 8 (available in freezer section)

To make green chili sauce:
Add salt & pepper to cubed pork and braise. Add enough water to cover by about an inch. Add tomato sauce, chopped tomatoes, chopped onions (if desired), hot jalapeno peppers (be careful how much so it's not to hot), green chili peppers, garlic powder, 1 tsp. salt, and cumin powder. Let simmer. When pork is done, thicken with flour or cornstarch (we don't thicken it at all, it's pretty thick when we let it simmer on the stove for awhile).

To make filling:
Cook hamburger with taco mix as directed on package.

To make turnovers:
Cut puff pastry into 8 squares. Put 2 Tbsp cooked hamburger on each puff. Fold over and seal (they seal better if you brush the edges with water 1st).

Bake at 400 degree for about 15 minutes. When ready to serve, put green chili sauce on turnover, add cheese, lettuce, tomato, and sour cream.

Yields: 8 servings
