I have a recipe from my grandmother that calls for currants, citron, briar molasses, and nutmeats. Where can I find them in St Louis. Here is the recipe.
Fruit Cookies - makes 300 cookies
6 bottles Brier Rabbit molasses
1 qt Crisco
1 c sugar
1 lb currants
1 lb dark raisins
1 pkg citron
1 qt nutmeats
Sift together:
about 5 pounds flour
2 Tbsp cinnamon
2 Tbsp cloves
2 Tbsp nutmeg
2 Tbsp allspice
1 heaping tsp salt
Dissolve 1/2 cup baking soda in 1/2 c buttermilk and add to above mixture. Stir well.
Roll out to about 1/4 to 1/2". Spread sugar on dough. Cut with 2"cookie cutter Reroll remaining dough. Spread lighter sprinkle of sugar on dough. Continue until dough is gone.
Place on a greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees F for 12 minutes. Cookies will be flat. Store in air tight container with wax paper between layers. Will last almost forever.
