Recipe: Orange-Date Bread (using whole orange, Oster blender recipe, 1950's)

2 cups flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup pitted dates, chilled, divided use
1 cup walnuts, divided use
1 egg
2/3 cup milk
1 medium orange, unpeeled
2 tablespoons shortening
3/4 cup sugar
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan.
Sift flour, salt, baking soda and baking powder into large mixing bowl; set aside.
Put 1/2 cup dates and 1/2 cup walnuts into blender container. Cover, and run on Hi until chopped. Add to flour mixture in bowl.
Chop remaining dates and nuts, and add to flour mixture; set aside.
Put egg, milk and orange (cut in eighths and seeds removed) in blender container. Cover and run on Lo, then Hi until orange peel is finely chopped.
Add sugar and shortening; cover blender and mix on Hi until blended. Push the ingredients down from the sides of the container with a rubber spatula if necessary.
Add orange mixture to flour mixture and stir. Pour into preapred loaf pan.
Bake at 350 degrees F for I hour and 20 minutes.
Makes 1 loaf
