THE HEARTHSTONE INN SPICY MANDARIN ORANGE MUFFINS

1 (8 oz) can mandarin oranges, drained
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup sugar
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. allspice
Pinch of cinnamon
1/3 cup Crisco vegetable shortening
1 egg, slightly beaten
1/4 cup milk
FOR TOPPING:
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup sugar mixed with 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease muffin cups.
Drain orange segments well and spread over paper towel, while making batter.
Sift flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, nutmeg, allspice, and cinnamon in bowl. Cut in shortening very fine.
Combine egg and milk all at once. Mix until just moistened. Add orange segments. Mix lightly until evenly distributed. Fill prepared muffin tins 3/4 full.
Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Remove from muffin tins.
Dip top of muffin in melted butter or margarine, then in sugar-cinnamon mixture. Serve hot.
