Recipe: Soft Molasses Cookies (using brown sugar and sour milk, 1968)

SOFT MOLASSES COOKIES

3 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground cloves
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp salt
2/3 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
1 egg, well beaten
1/2 cup molasses
1 tsp vanilla
2/3 cup sour milk

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Grease baking sheets.

Sift together flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, cloves, ginger and salt; set aside.

Cream shortening; gradually add brown sugar and continue beating until light. Add egg, molasses and vanilla; blend well. Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with sour milk. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto prepared baking sheet.

Bake at 375 degrees F for 10-12 minutes.

Makes 8 dozen cookies
