Recipe(tried): Spiced Apple Rings
Misc.ADVERTISEMENT
Hi,
I have a gravenstein apple tree in my front yard. I just finished the last of the apple harvest. Here are some recipes I used to take care of my overabundance.
Enjoy!
Spiced Apple Rings
Source: Kerr Kitchen Cookbook
Yield: 7 pints
6 pounds firm Granny Smith apples
6 cups sugar
2 cups water
1/2 cup vinegar (labeled 5% acidity)
5 cinnamon sticks, broken
1 tablespoon whole cloves
teaspoon whole allspice
2 teaspoons red food coloring
Tie spices in spice bag or cheesecloth. In a 6 to 8 quart saucepan, combine all ingredients except apples. Over medium-high heat, bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer 5 minutes. Peel, core and thinly slice the apples. Add apples to the syrup and bring the mixture to a boil. Remove from heat and remove spices. Immediately fill hot wide mouth pint jars with apples and syrup, leaving -inch syrup headspace. Carefully run a nonmetallic utensil down inside of jars to remove trapped air bubbles. Wipe jar tops and threads clean. Place hot lids on jars and screw bands on firmly. Process in Boiling Water Canner at 200-212 degrees F for 10 minutes.
