I bake my meatballs in the oven, too. It certainly helps with cleanup and they come out tender. It also eliminates turning them over and having them lose their shape.
Speaking of shape...I turn out my meat and vegetable mixture out onto wax paper or plastic wrap and pat into a rectangle the desired thickness of the finished meatballs. I then cut the rectangles into equal squares (like cutting brownies or fudge) with either a chef's knife or pastry scraper and then roll each square into a ball and plop them on the baking sheet. Very quick, clean, and easy!
