ISO: Damon's Onion Loaf - question

This may be a silly question, but here goes. When dipping onion rings in pancake mix, is the mix dry or liquid. I've seen pancake mix used both ways. Thank you so much I look forward to trying this recipe as I love Damons onion loaf
