ISO: Need Muffaleta origins

Misc.
I'm trying to find out the origin of the muffaleta sandwich. I've searched several places and get conflicting answers. It's either from New Orleans or Italy. It MUST be served on Italian bread, a large soft bun, foccacio or sourdough. One referrence even talked about Muffaleta Bread but didn't give any details. Can you clear up my confusion?
