ISO: Novice Smoker

I received a smoker for Father's Day. I love it and have had good results with ribs and no clue.

I could use any input available to help with fun flavors and recipes. I use dry rubs and am experimenting with different woods. Someone said use garlic. How? Let it smoke rapped in foil in the fire, or in the water pan?
