ISO: Shriveled looking Pickled Asparagus

I have pickled some asparagus spears according to recipe. It had 1 to 1 of vinegar and water and salt. My Asparagus looks terrible. It is shriveld. What can I do next time to avoid this?Thanks for any and all help.
