Hi Jackie and Rose -
I was at a friend's home (She's Swedish) while she was baking cookie's using this very old recipe with ammonia in it. You could smell the ammonia as they were baking, but once they were out of the oven, there was no ammonia smell or taste to them. They were wonderful!

I looked up on Ask Jeeves about the use of ammonia, and it's used as a leavening agent in old recipes before they had baking powder.

The smell was kind of a turn-off, but the taste was great. This recipe you posted sounds very much like the one she was using. Very simple basic recipe.
