Hi Saxon,
You had a pieroshki of sorts ) I liked your term "hybrid"....I've heard of the deep fried dishes but never had/seen them. The recipe is probably one that's neither Polish (boiled/fried) nor Russian (baked).
While you could use the same fillings as those you had in pieroshki, fish was never one of them that I've heard of. Perhaps it's Scandinavian, from a seaport country. [Several years ago I met a woman from E. Germany who had never seen a fish, so getting a fish dinner in America was a real big thing to her, and I can only guess that in Poland & Russia as well only the communist aristocracy had such benefits.]
