Recipe: Beef in a Bread Bowl (hot chipped beef dip, Carnation, 1980's)

Nothing will be left. Not even the "bowl."
1 large or 2 small uncut loaves crusty bread
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 cup undiluted Carnation Evaporated Milk
1/2 cup water
1 (3 ounce) package cream cheese
1 1/2 cups diced, rinsed dried beef (5 ounces)
1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper
8 to 10 drops hot pepper sauce
1 teaspoon prepared mustard
Cut tops off bread; pull out center to hollow. Tear bread tops and center pieces to use as dippers. Set aside.
Saute onion in butter in medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir in cornstarch; mix thoroughly. Gradually stir in evaporated milk and water. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture just comes to a boil and thickens. Stir in cream cheese, dried beef, bell pepper, hot pepper sauce, and mustard until cheese melts.
Spoon hot beef mixture into hollowed bread; serve.
Makes 2 2/3 cups beef mixture
