using the pats of butter gives different textures across the top of the dump cake. i prefer it this way.... also it allows for the slower spread of the butter.... i have made this recipie for years.... usually using white or yellow cake mix and pineapples and cherry pie filling.... try chocolate cake mix for a change.... or peaches and blueberry pie filling.... yummy
