Recipe(tried): Favorte Frosting and Grandma Agnes' Jello Icing (cooked frosting with milk, flour, and butter/shortening)

Desserts - Fillings, Frostings
Derek, still can't find mine, but here are two others that are similar. I called my sister-in-law and she couldn't remember the exact measurements either, but here are two I found in my file. The first one is from Taste of Home magazine. The second one comes from my Grandmother's files, I don't remember her ever making it, I found the recipe after she passed on and have made it several times for my DH who loves cherry flavor. I don't think you have to use a double boiler for it, you can probably employ the same method as the other two recipes. By the way all these recipes use granulated, not powdered sugar, I'm not sure if I mentioned that in my previous post.

FAVORITE FROSTING

1 cup milk
5 Tablespoons flour
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla

Combine milk and flour in a saucepan; cook until thick. Cover and refrigerate. In a mixing bowl, beat butter, shortening, sugar and vanilla until creamy. Add chilled milk/flour mixture and beat for 10 minutes. Wait until your cake is compeletly cooled to frost with this frosting.

GRANDMA AGNES' JELLO ICING

1 cup milk
2 3/4 Tablespoons flour
1/2 cup Crisco or Spry
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 to 1/2 package jello

Combine milk and flour in the top of a double boiler over simmering water. Cook until thick. Chill well. Cream crisco with sugar. Add jello. Cream well. Add thoroughly chilled flour mixture a spoon at a time. Beat after each addition. After last addition, beat until thick like whipped cream.
