Jennie Allison's Chocolate Drops
rec.food.baking/Kay Lancaster (1997)
1/2 cup shortening
2 oz baking chocolate
1 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup nuts (if desired -- we usually use black walnuts)
about 1 1/2 cups flour (or enough to form soft dough)
Melt chocolate into shortening; cool to room temperature.
Cream in sugar; add egg, vanilla, salt and milk.
Stir in flour until the dough is soft, about like a drop biscuit dough (amount of flour will depend on humidity and moisture content of flour).
Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls on a greased cookie sheet; bake in preheated oven (400F) for 8-10 minutes until almost no imprint remains when touched.
If desired, frost with:
Chocolate Frosting
Melt together:
2 oz baking chocolate
2 Tbsp butter or margarine
Blend in:
2 cups powdered sugar
3 Tbsp water
