Recipe(tried): Kase Knepfla

Main Dishes - Assorted
my mother in law, who was of german-russian descendance, made a similiar dish called kase knepfla. it was always a hug favorite with everyone clamoring for more.

The filling was cottage cheese, green onions, egg and salt and pepper. The gravy was 1/2 and 1/2, butter and large bread crumbs sauteed in butter.

she grew up in kansas and my father in law grew up in north dakota. this was a traditional dish that both their families prepared. they were germans who emigrated to russia during catherine the great's reign. they emigrated to the usa in the late 1800's.

i read somewhere that kase knepfla was probably a version of varyneky that the german immigrants developed. it's very yummy.
