Recipe(tried): Long car trip with kids...

We just returned from a 5 hour car trip to Maine. I borrow, from the library, books on cassette tapes to listen to on our ride. My children are 14, 12 and 9. We listened to The Indian In The Cupboard ( this is a series of 3 books by Lynn Reid Banks) read by the author. We also heard The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. Others we have chosen: London Snow by Paul Theroux, Tom's Midnight Garden by Philippa Pearce, The Secrets of Kelly's Mill by Zena Carus. We have a wonderful library system in which we can order books and tapes from other libraries. I go to the chidren's section of the library and local book stores and write down the titles of books that sound interesting and see if they are available on tape. My kids get so involved in the story, we are THERE before they know it.
