Monte Cristo Sandwiches (like Bennigan's)

12 slices white bread
6 slices turkey breast -- cooked/sliced
6 slices Swiss cheese
6 slices cooked ham

Batter:
1 1/2 cups flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/3 cups water
1 egg

vegetable oil -- for deep-frying
confectioner's sugar -- for dusting
raspberry jam -- for accompaniment

Place 1-slice of turkey on each of the 6-slices of white bread, and top with the turkey with a layer of cheese and a layer of ham. Top each sandwich with remaining slices of bread. Cut each sandwich into quarters, using wood picks to hold quarters together.

To make the batter, sift the flour, and the baking powder, and the salt. Then add the water to the beaten egg and add to flour mixture. Mix well.

Dip each sandwich into batter and fry in oil heated to 360F or until golden brown. Remove picks and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Serve with raspberry jelly.
