I have also seem more modern Opera Cake recipes use buttercream frosting recipe. I'll include Opera Cake recipe that got very good reviews on another recipe board.
OPERA FROSTING

Mix 1 1/2 cups brown sugar, 1/4 thin cream and 1 Tablespoon butter; bring to a boil stirring til sugar is melted, then boil without stirring till a drop in cold water froms a soft ball. Remove and cool somewhat. Then beat till right consistency to spread.
OPERA CREAM REFRIGERATOR FROSTING

5 tbsp. flour
1 cup milk
1 cup granulated sugar
2 sticks (1 cup) butter
1 tsp. vanilla
Cook flour and milk in a small sauce pan until thick like paste. Cool completely. While waiting for the flour paste to cool, cream together butter and sugar in a mixing bowl and place in refrigerator. After paste is completely cooled, remove mixing bowl from refrigerator and add vanilla, beat mixture with an electric mixer until thick and smooth. Make sure all grains of sugar have dissolved. In hot weather, due to the high butter content, frosting should be refrigerated.
