Recipe: Pfeffernusse (Pepper Nut Cookies) (with walnut half in the middle)

Desserts - Cookies, Brownies, Bars
PFEFFERNUSSE (PEPPER NUT COOKIES)

2 lbs. dark brown sugar
6 eggs, beaten
4 tbsp. molasses
Flour (about 1 quart)
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. ground cloves
1 tsp. ground allspice
1 tsp. ground nutmeg
1 tsp. ground black pepper
2 lbs. walnuts

Gradually add sugar to beaten eggs. Add molasses, spices sifted with flour, and baking powder. Knead and add more flour until dough is hard.

Cut off in squares and place 1/2 nut in center. Form dough around nut (size of small walnut). Put on cookie sheet in cool place overnight.

Bake at 375 degrees F about 15 minutes or until golden brown. Store in crock for about 2 weeks before eating.

Dear Kathy,

This recipe looks similar to what you described but the chilling of the dough happens after shaping and the dipping in milk and powdered sugar is missing. I hope someone will have the exact recipe for you.

Happy Holiday Baking!
