I bought a flexible plastic, placemat size "cutting board" type of thing, intending to use it for cutting. I've ended up using it more for working with dough (bread, cookie, anything) on my pull-out bread board and I never have any more trouble cleaning up because it's so easy to wash.
When I took some risen bread dough to a BBQ party once (hoping people would be game to play with it, then grill their creations .. they were and it was really fun), I brought along plastic placemats for them to work on at the outdoor table. Worked just fine, so that's a more economical option. Wish I'd known about the bench flour in a shaker then, that *did* become a mess out there, pulling it out of a sandwich baggie ;).
Oh, if you decide to do the bread thing with people at a gathering (great if there's a child around - adults are less intimidated then and get pretty playful, I and toppings available. Even just having sesame and poppy seeds to sprinkle seemed a big deal to these folks. I brought onions, herbs, pesto, olives ... whatever you want.
Have fun,
Janet
