ISO: Green Tomatoes.......

At Christmas i had the most wonderful green tomato chutney which my boyfriends step mother had made. I asked for the recipe and it's an old Mrs Beaton one (if anyone wants it, let me know) Anyway, my question is.....are green tomatoes unripe regular tomatoes or are they a different variety? Thanks
