ISO: Tomato - Hot or Cold pack?

Misc.
Every book I have read on canning states to boil tomatoes before canning (hot water method). The other day on Martha Stewart, she canned tomatoes RAW - just packed them into the jars (cored, peeled and seeded) added some salt and basil and processed in boiling water for about 45 minutes. What do you think of this? I am new to canning and want to do it right! Thanks in advance - jeanne
