Debby please answer what I hope is not a

Misc.
really stupid question. Maybe its just because I could never get my family to eat turnips. Anyway, what is the difference between turnips and turnip roots? I thought turnips were roots. Is there a trick to preparing them? Something you do automatically, that posssibly my Mom forgot to teach me?
Any help would be appreciated
