translation notes, pandan thoughts

Misc.

I got a phone call just as I finished typing the translation, so I went ahead and posted it so my connection didn't drop while I was on the phone. Now, for a few background notes -

I marked with an asterik where I was guessing a little on the translation - just two places and I don't think I got anything seriously wrong. Maybe Chris will eventually be able to clarify but maybe not, I think there is some Javanese influence there so Malay may not have all the same words. For example, does he know what "selang-seling" means? It is "alternating" in Indonesian, but I'm almost certain that is Javanese. Words like that (gerak-gerik is another) almost always are.

As for the method, I had to look up "dandang" and it is defined as a rice steamer. However, it may be a particular KIND of rice steamer. Offhand, I cannot visualize well how I would use my ordinary rice steamer to make this cake. I think one should probably use the rice pot inside the steamer for the pan.

On a related topic, pandan is almost certainly safe stuff. In Micronesia, the lower caste peoples of Yap eat the fruit of the pandan tree (it is very tough and fibrous so it is reserved for them; higher castes get better fruits). They don't seem to suffer any ill effects. Of course, fruit and leaves are not the same...potatos are good but aren't the leaves slightly poisonous (as potatos are related to nightshade)?
