Recipe: Apple Walnut Squares (with coffee, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves)

1/2 cup butter
1 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
2 tbsp instant coffee (dry)
2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1/2 tsp ground cloves
2/3 cup evaporated milk
3 cups finely diced peeled green apples (about 2 large apples)
1 cup chopped walnuts
ice cream or whipped topping (for serving)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Waxed paper-line a 13x9x2-inch baking pan.
Cream butter and sugar in large mixing bowl. Beat in eggs, vanilla, and coffee.
Sift flour, baking powder, soda, salt, and spices. Stir flour mixture and milk into egg mixture alternately, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Stir in apples and walnuts. Pour into prepared baking pan.
Bake at 350 degrees F for 50-60 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool slightly. Cut into 15 squares.
Serve warm with your favorite ice cream or whipped topping.
