Recipe: Bride's Biscuits (make ahead or freeze ahead)

Breads - Assorted
BRIDE'S BISCUITS

6 cups white flour
3 tablespoons sugar
5 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup shortening
2 cups buttermilk (or soured milk)
2 teaspoons dry yeast (or 1 package)
3 tablespoons warm water (95-105 degrees F)

Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Grease cookie sheets.

Sift dry ingredients together, then cut in shortening. Add buttermilk.

Dissolve yeast in water and add to mixture. Knead lightly on floured surface.

Roll out to 1/2-inches thick, cut with biscuit cutter and place on prepared cookie sheets.

Bake at 450 degrees F about 10-12 minutes.

Dough may be stored in the refrigerator, pinching off as much as is needed each time, or may be cut and then frozen.

A family friend gave me this recipe when I married. Included was this note: "Cut and freeze these biscuits in foil pans. Place them in a cold oven at night. Next morning, turn oven to 450 degrees F when the bacon starts frying. Presto! Hot biscuits for breakfast!" - Jewel Stam
