This sounds great, and I intend to try it for myself. I have another apple pie recipe (sugarless) with a bit of a zing to it.
SPICY ENGLISH APPLE TART
2 ready-made pie crusts
2 medium sweet apples (pink ladies or gala)
about 2 tablespoons dates
1/2 small lemon
3 tablespoons margarine
1 teaspoon fructose
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
about 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
Peel, core, and chop up apples. Chop dates roughly.
Cut up lemon (peel and all) in food chopper.
Put all fruit in unbaked bottom pie crust. Add margarine slices and spices, sprinkling the cinnamon liberally over the mixture. Cover with top pie crust, punching holes in top.
Bake at 325 degrees F until crust is browned and filling juicy.
You can add a little more lemon (or lemon and orange) without doing damage to the flavor, or you can substitute orange for lemon, tho. lemon is better.
(This is based on Katie Stewart and Pamela Michael's Wild Blackberry Cobbler and Other Old-Fashioned Recipes -- Salem House, 1984. (Great recipe book, though you have to modify them all.)
