Recipe(tried): Hamburger Toast
SandwichesCarolyn,
Growing up one of my favorite meals was Hamburger Toast. My kids all thought it was the worst stuff ever, but now that they are grown and out on their own I make it for my DH and myself at least once a month. My recipe doesn't include quantities because, like my Mom, I go by the amount of ground beef I have thawed.
Ground Beef (a really lean ground beef works best)
Chopped onion, to taste
Yellow Mustard, to taste
Catsup, to taste
In a bowl combine the ground beef and chopped onion with just enough catsup and yellow mustard moisten the mixture without being "soupy". Spread a small amount of the meat mixture on untoasted white bread slices (with the crust on). Since the meat is uncooked you don't want to spread it too thick or your bread will burn before the meat is done. At this point I usually bake these on a cookie sheet at around 400 degrees until the bottom of the bread is toasted, then transfer to the broiler to finish browning te top. Serve with additional catsup and mustard.
I think I might have to go home and make some of these tonight and serve them with pickle spears and Cream of Tomato soup (it is really cold here)!
I hope this is close to what you remember.
