Melt together:
1 stick butter (1/2 cup)
2 squares (2 oz) unsweetened chocolate
Take the saucepan off the heat.

Stir in:
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Beat the mixture well.

Stir in:
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt

At this point you may also add:
1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Bake the brownies in a buttered and floured 8-inch-square pan at 325 degrees F for about 40-45 minutes.
