Recipe(tried): Oven Swiss Steak

Main Dishes - Beef and Other Meats
Oven Swiss Steak

1 1/2 pounds round steak, cut 3/4 inches thick
1/4 all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons shortening
1 (16 oz) can tomatoes, cut up
1/2 cup finely chopped celery
1/2 cup finely chopped onion
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Cut meat into 6 serving size portions.

Combine flour and salt; pound 2 tablespoons of the mixture into meat. Brown meat on both sides in hot shortening. Transfer meat into 12 x 71/2 x 2 inch baking dish.

Blend remaining 2 tablespoons of flour mixture into pan drippings. Stir in undrained tomatoes, celery, onion, and Worcestershire. Cook and stir until thickened and bubbly; pour over meat.

Bake, covered, at 350-F until tender, about 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Great with mashed potatoes. Hope you enjoy as much as we do.

Makes 6 servings
