These are very rich....but very good!
TRI-LEVEL BROWNIES
BOTTOM LAYER:
1 cup quick-cooking oats
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
6 Tablespoons butter or margarine, melted
MIDDLE LAYER:
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted
1 (1-ounce) square unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled
1 egg
2/3 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
FUDGE FROSTING:
1 (1-ounce) square unsweetened chocolate
2 Tablespoons butter or margarine
1 1/2 cup sifted powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
About 2 Tablespoons hot water
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
FOR BOTTOM LAYER:
Stir together oats, flour brown sugar and salt. Stir in melted butter. Pat in the bottom of a 11x7x1 1/2-inch baking pan.
Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.
FOR MIDDLE LAYER:
Combine granulated sugar, melted butter and chocolate; add egg. Beat well.
Stir together flour, baking powder and salt. Reserve.
Mix milk and vanilla together add to chocolate mixture alternately with reserved mixture, mixing after each addition. Fold in nuts. Spread batter over baked layer.
Continue baking at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Cool.
FOR FUDGE FROSTING:
In small saucepan melt chocolate and butter over low heat; stir constantly. Remove from heat; stir in sifted powdered sugar and vanilla. Blend in hot water to make almost pourable consistency.
Frost cooled brownies with Fudge Frosting. Cut into bars. Top with walnut halves, if desired.
