ISO: Is it the sugar or the caffine... (in cola based bbq sauce)

I've made recipes for years using cola as an ingredient, it seems to tenderize things wonderfully, but had to stop when my husband developed a medical problem which prohibits him from having any type of caffine. We can't seem to find out if the caffine dissapears like alcohol during the cooking process. Does anyone out there know? I'm thinking of trying the recipe with caffine-free cola. Will let you know the results. Thanks, Micha
