Desserts - Cakes
Here's one out of my gramma's recipies. This is how she had it written down. I think Betty might be Betty Crocker, maybe?

BETTY'S OLD FASHION THREE LAYER CHOCOLATE CAKE (1949)
Oven 350 degrees F.

3 cake rounds greased and floured
2 cups boiling water
1/2 cup cocoa powder (unsweetened)
3 cups flour
2 tsp bicarbonate of soda (baking soda)
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup oleo (margarine)
2 cups sugar
4 eggs
Scrapings of 2 vanilla beans
Juice from small lemon

Pour boiling water over cocoa powder and stir until dissolved; set aside to cool.

Sift together the flour, bicarbonate of soda, baking powder, salt; set aside

Cream together the oleo, sugar, add one egg at a time mix until fluffy; add vanilla scrapings and juice from lemon. Add to creamed mixture alternating flour mix with cocoa mixture. Continue to mix until fluffy.

Spread into three greased and floured cake rounds.

Bake in 350 degree F oven for 25-30 minutes

DOROTHY'S CHOCOLATE FROSTING
(Dorothy is my grandmother)

2 cups sugar
1/2 cup cocoa (unsweetened cocoa powder)
1/2 cup fresh milk
3 large pats of oleo (margarine)
Scrapings of 1 vanilla bean

In cast iron skillet cook all ingredients on very low fire until it reaches 238 degrees F - DO NOT STIR. Remove from fire, stir once, and let it cool until it lukewarm.

When lukewarm mix with beaters until it is fluffy and will spread evenly.

Save leftover frosting in icebox for toasted bread or biscuits.
