Recipe: Chocolate Chip Meringue Bars (13x9-inch with meringue baked on top, 1960's)

CHOCOLATE CHIP MERINGUE BARS


3/4 cup shortening
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon of vanilla
1/2 cup white granulated sugar
1 1/2 cups brown sugar, divided use
2 eggs, separated
1 tablespoon water
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 (6 ounce) package chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped nuts.

Combine shortening with salt and vanilla. Add white sugar and 1/2 cup brown sugar; cream well. Add egg yolks and 1 tablespoon water and mix well; set aside..

Sift together flour, baking powder and baking soda. Add to creamed mixture. Combine well and spread in 9x13-inch greased baking pan. Sprinkle with chocolate chips and nuts; set aside.

Beat egg whites until, foamy and add the remaining 1 cup brown sugar. Spread this on top.

Bake at 350 degrees F for 40 to 45 minutes.
