Recipe(tried): Mama's Hot Rolls (bread machine or regular)

Breads - Yeast Breads
This is my grandmother's recipe. We have adapted it for the bread machine. She was a life-long resident of DeWitt, Ar. where I too grew up. These would freeze well after baking.

MAMA'S HOT ROLLS

1 large egg -- beaten
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup boiling water
1/2 cup shortening or butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 packages yeast
3 cups flour

TO MAKE IN THE BREAD MACHINE:
PUT SHORTENING AND SUGAR IN THE BREAD MACHINE.
POUR IN THE BOILING WATER. LET SIT UNTIL SOME OF SHORTENING IS MELTED. CHECK TEMPERATURE 100-110 DEGREES.
ADD OTHER INGREDIENTS ACCORDING TO MACHINE INSTRUCTIONS. MIX ON DOUGH CYCLE. MAKE INTO ROLLS. LET RISE IN WARM PLACE UNTIL DOUBLE IN SIZE.
BAKE AT 375 DEGREES FOR 15-20 MINUTES OR UNTIL BROWN.
BRUSH WITH LOTS OF BUTTER.

REGULAR METHOD:
COMBINE SUGAR AND SHORTENING.
ADD BOILING WATER (LET SUGAR DISSOLVE AND COOL) .
ADD EGG AND YEAST STIR MIXTURE.
ADD FLOUR AND SALT. STIR WELL AND PLACE IN A COVERED BOWL FOR AT LEAST 5 HOURS OR OVERNIGHT IN THE FRIG.
REMOVE FROM BOWL AFTER AT LEAST 5 HOURS-KNEAD DOUGH AND FORM ROLLS.
PLACE IN GREASED PAN AND LET RISE AGAIN.
