Recipe: Stuffed Sandwiches - Italian Hero Sandwich, Meal on a Loaf, Frontierland Sandwich, Stromboli Sandwich, Hearty Hero

Italian Hero Sandwich
1 loaf Italian bread
4 Tbsp. butter
1 (6 oz.) can tomato sauce
1 clove garlic
1 lb. ground Italian sausage
1 lb. ground beef
2 tsp. Italian seasoning
Slice Italian bread lengthwise in half. Coat 9 x
11-inch baking sheet with melted butter, use the remaining butter to coat top of bread when ready to bake. Scoop out inside of bread. Brown sausage, ground beef, add tomato sauce, garlic and Italian seasoning, spoon into bread. (May top with cheese, mushrooms, add or subtract seasonings to taste). Put top half of bread on, use toothpicks to hold in place. Bake in 375 degrees oven for 20 minutes or until brown and cheese melts, slice in 3-inch slices.
Meal on a Loaf
1 lb. ground beef
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 loaf Italian bread
1 c. grated American or
Velveeta cheese
Saute beef in skillet, breaking it up as it cooks.
Spoon off grease and stir in 1 can cream of mushroom soup. Heat until bubbly. Cut loaf of bread in half lengthwise, scoop out a little dough in each half. Spread meat mixture onto each
half. Cover each half with cheese. Bake at 350 degrees until cheese melts. Slice and serve.
Frontierland Sandwich
1 lb. ground beef
1/2 c. chopped onion
1/3 c. chopped green pepper
3/4 c. barbecue sauce
4 oz. can mushrooms
1/2 tsp. salt
1 Italian bread loaf
12 American cheese slices
Brown meat and drain. Add onion and pepper. Cook until tender. Add barbecue sauce, mushrooms and salt. Simmer 15 minutes. Cut loaf lengthwise. Scoop out center, leaving 1-inch shell. Fill with hot meat mixture. Cover with cheese and top bread slice. Wrap with aluminum foil. Bake at 400 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes. Serves 6 to 8.
Stromboli Sandwich
1 lb. mild Italian sausage(remove casing)
1/2 lb. ground beef
1 c. chopped onion
1/2 c. chopped green pepper
few mushrooms
8 oz. tomato sauce
1 large loaf Italian bread
6 oz. tomato paste
1/4 c. water
1/4 c. grated Parmesan cheese
1/4 tsp. oregano
1/4 tsp. garlic salt
1/4 tsp. rosemary
1 pkg. Mozzarella cheese slices
Brown meat. Add onion, green pepper and mushrooms.
Cook five minutes. Stir in tomato sauce, tomato paste, water, Parmesan cheese, oregano, garlic salt and rosemary. Simmer ten minutes. Cut bread lengthwise. Scoop out center. Put 1/2 cheese slices in bottom of bread. Fill with mixture. Cover with remaining cheese. Place remaining half of bread on top. Wrap in foil and bake 6 to 8 minutes at 400 degrees. Slice to serve.
Hearty Hero
1 loaf Italian bread
1/4 c. butter
1 lb. ground beef
2 Tbsp. minced onion
3/4 c. ketchup
1/2 lb. Mozzarella cheese, sliced
grated Parmesan cheese
Split bread in half lengthwise; spread with butter. Combine beef, onion and ketchup. Spread on bread. Arrange slices of Mozzarella cheese on top; sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Bake at 400 degrees for 25 minutes. Slice to serve 6.
