Recipe(tried): Tomato Fizzle (re: Tomato Bread Pudding)

Side Dishes - Vegetables
Sounds like a dish my mother called tomato fizzle. It's one of those hand me down dishes that don't have recipes to follow. Here's a guide and hope it's to your liking.

1 small onion, thinly sliced in 1/4 sections
Tbsp. butter
1 (16 oz) canned plain tomatoes or stewed tomatoes (whichever you're craving)
1 cup water
sugar to taste
salt and pepper to taste
2 to 4 slices of white bread

Lightly saute onion in butter.

Add tomatoes, water, and seasonings. Bring to a boil, lower heat and simmer to desired consistency.

Tear up bread and stir into the tomatoes.

If mom wanted to "gratin" it, she would sprinkle over it some dried bread crumbs and dot with additional butter and broil until crispy brown. I liked it right off the stove!
