I was startled when my toaster croaked after only a couple of years. It seemed to me toasters aren't lasting very long these days. Anyway, I went shopping. To my shock, a really GOOD toaster, one that made great toast and would accept all the weird sized breads we eat now - was $100! Recommendations from cooks and Consumer Reports and various sources really were discouraging. Practically everybody liked the KitchenAid best. When I inspected, I discovered they use heater "bars" instead of wires like most toasters.

I bought - and returned - several cheaper toasters.Eventually, I got frustrated and bought a $20 Welbilt toaster oven on sale at Fry's Electronics. I looked inside and saw the same heater bar setup as the KitchenAid. It makes great, fab, perfectly golden toast on the top. Alas, the under part has grill marks from the rack. However, it has a continuous clean surface and an easy clean crumb tray. I do like the toast and can put two HUGE slices of shepherd bread in it at once.

It has a Toast setting and a timer. I have learned to set longer toasting times for very fresh, moist bread. I'm quite happy using this thing as a toaster. I've never really done anything else with it. For $20, it was a steal. I put the perfect side out on sandwiches.
